Every individual has the right to participate socially in activities that will provide them benefit. It is disrespectful to place someone in an activity that is beyond their ability for participation or comprehension.

These individuals could, however, participate meaningfully in activities of a more specific nature or activities that have been modified to meet their needs. Some modifications are quite easy to make while others may require more time and effort but, once accomplished, they will remain available to all future endeavors.
Being physically, auditorily, or visually challenged should never bar an individual from finding pleasure each day through interaction with staff and/or peers.

The most socially withdrawn individuals are historically those with hearing impairments. The more severe the impairment, the more withdrawn they become. This is a challenging population that requires ingenuity and perseverance.
