We acquired a small wooden wagon. The “wood” part was important because we added a framework to support the canopy. The frame was made with 2×2 lumber attached with nuts and bolts so it would be easy to install and remove.

The canopy was simply made using brightly colored poster board. Adding additional pieces to the sides of the wagon provided a colorful screen for the coolers that were riding inside.

Coolers were filled with bagged ice and a variety of ice cream treats on a stick. (We did not use Dixie cups because they were already available to residents at any time). Our treats included ice cream bars, fudgesicles, and drumsticks.

The wagon was pulled by an electric wheelchair and the driver carried an iPod that played the jingle from ice cream trucks on the street. An assistant walked alongside to assist in getting the chosen treat from the coolers. If funds and policy allow, treats may also be provided for staff.
