July’s party naturally centers around the celebration for the Fourth. Colors for table décor can be red, white and/or blue, napkins and small paper plates. The center pieces can be easily constructed with miniature flags and tinsel start bursts from the dollar store. Simply arrange them in a bud vase in the table center. Tinsel glitter in the shape of flags or star bursts can be scattered around the table for added sparkle.

A CD of Sousa marches played softly in the background adds a nice touch. To entertain the participants as they wait for the party to begin, word scrambles, word searches, or a maze, dealing with Independence Day can be placed on each table with a collection of pens. (These could be laminated and reused, with dry erase markers.)

It’s always more fun for participants if the emcee dresses the part, wearing red, white, and blue, or dressing like Uncle Sam. It’s also fun to share a few fun facts about Independence Day, before treats are served.

We have also started this day with a parade through the halls. Individuals acquire help to decorate wheelchairs and walkers, either the day before or the morning of the parade. Staff members are always very willing to help with this activity, using provided wire tinsels, flags, fabric, or tinsel burst for decorations.

Then other participants gather in a central place and parade through the facility, waving flags, walking to the marching music carried by the leader. The parade would end in the room hosting the party.
