This is such a fun activity and it gives the participant and their families a wonderful photo that they will treasure.  It is an activity that is done only one time during the year and then perhaps not again for 2 or 3 years.  There is a cost involved in printing the photos and framing them, but it is so worth it.

The first thing to do is gather the “dress-up” pieces.  Men will require a choice of hats, top hat, derby, fedora, or straw hat and a tie, bow tie, or bolo.  The jacket can be a choice of a formal tux, a simple suit coat, or a light colored sport coat to go with the straw hat.   A white shirt is a necessity.  One can be purchased for $.50 at a second hand store.  Slit it up the back so it can easily be placed over the gentleman’s own clothing.  Props might include a large old fashioned pipe and walking stick.  A back drop can be made by hanging a fairly dark colored sheet over a clothes rack or room divider.  The men have a great time with this activity and hang around just to watch the other go through the picture process.

Women’s dress-up should include fur stoles, feather boas, large brimmed hats or pill boxes with a veil, fur hats, or head bands with feathers and veils, dark dress gloves, large beads, or flashy chains and bracelets, and an evening bag.  The women also get a make-up session before their photo with the application of lipstick, rouge, and maybe some eyeshadow.  They have a wonderful time of it and there is plenty of laughter!  The photos are from the waste up and some are simply head shots.

Frames can be purchased from the dollar store.  The costume items can be rented from a costume shop if you have one available or you might need to put out a call to your facility staff requesting use of the various pieces they might have at home.

Simple props can be provided for various pictures. Pictured here, a newspaper, a pipe, various hats, neckties etc. Taken in color or black and white for more of a nostalgic feel.
