Pouring Activity

PURPOSE:

  • Practice eye-hand coordination
  • Promote the use of everyday objects
  • Practice the performance of a common work skill

MATERIALS:

  • One tray
  • One small funnel
  • Several plastic containers (bottles) with small openings
  • Container to hold the rice
  • Container for jars and funnel
  • Small measuring cups (1/4 cup and 1/3 cup measurers)

SET-UP:

  1.  Remove funnel and all but one bottle from the larger container of rice
  2.  Place the container with rice in an easily reachable location
  3.  Place funnel in opening to bottle
  4.  Place measuring cup in the rice

INSTRUCTION:

  1. Grasp the funnel
  2. Scoop up one measuring cup of rice
  3. Pour the rice in the funnel so it can filter into the bottle
  4. Scoop up a second measuring cup of rice, continuing to hold the funnel
  5. Pour the rice into the bottle
  6. Ask the resident to scoop the rice and hold the funnel
  7. When the bottle is full, direct the resident to place the cover on the bottle
  8. Encourage the resident to continue with the activity until the bottles are full

DOWNWARD EXTENSION:

Let the resident scoop and pour the rice inside the large container without using the bottles

PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS:

P: The resident can’t hold the funnel and manipulate the cup at the same time

S: Place some rice in the bottle.  Once it has weight, it will support the funnel without needing to hold it

S: Let the resident pour the rice without using a funnel.  More rice will fall away from the bottle but it will eventually fill
