Gather a good size collection of representative items, some edible and others that obviously are not. Below are some examples:

  • Pencil
  • Jar Lid
  • Eraser
  • Necklace
  • Knick-Knack
  • Marker
  • Banana
  • Scissor
  • Block
  • Tape
  • Marshmallow
  • Oreo
  • Cheese
  • Jelly Beans
  • Raisins (not in a box)
  • Crackers
  • Peanuts
  • Bread Slice
  • Apple
  • Carrot
  • Crayon

Make sure edible items are package-free.  If shown raisins in a box, the answer to “Could you eat this?” might correctly be no, after-all who wants to eat a box?

Provide the resident with one item at a time and pose the question, “What is this?” If they respond correctly, then ask, “Could you eat this?”  If the individual is having difficulty, tell them what the item is.  “This is a carrot.  Could you eat this?”
