The breakfast club is not actually a “club” of regular members. It is an invited group consisting of different members each time. Participants are given a written invitation to come to the activity room for a special breakfast which will be prepared there and served to them at their regular breakfast time.
Participants in this group assist in the preparation of the meal. Firstly, all ingredients are placed on the table and verbally labeled. A short discussion might involve where the food item was raised, how it is usually prepared, how much it costs today, and what other dishes might it be used in.
Participants are given gloves and hairnets, paring knives or spatulas, cutting board, bowl, whisk, whatever piece of kitchen equipment they need. They crack and beat the eggs, they measure and mix the batter, they spoon the muffin batter into the cups, they dice the sausage, etc. As food items are readied the therapist will begin cooking. Once all preparations are done, residents remove gloves and nets and are given plates and forks and cups of tea or coffee and they are served their breakfast by the therapist.
Each Breakfast Club gathering will include different residents, giving everyone a chance to participate.
