Physical
Items required: a set of flatware, an inexpensive metal set is much superior to using plastic. Flatware sorting trays with divisions such as the type that goes into kitchen drawers, four of these would be good. Templates, one for each type of flatware: fork, spoon, knife, that will fit into the sorting trays. One large template for the table can aid in understanding the task required.
Gather participants around the table and greet each one. Place the large template on the table and then introduce the items that will be used, the flatware. Display on type at a time and ask participants to label the item as a fork, spoon, or knife. Then, place the item on the appropriate space on the large template that all can see. Next provide a sorting tray for each individual with the templates inserted as sorting guides.
Provide each participant with one piece of assorted flatware and ask them to place the item in the appropriate space of the tray. If the individual can do this, on the next attempt give them two or three pieces. Assist those who have difficulty so that each person will have success. While you are sorting the flatware, talk about how each piece is used, a spoon for soup, a knife for butter, a fork to eat pancakes, etc..
Cognitive
Items required: a set of flatware, preferably metal.
Now that the physical part of the activity is complete, you will ask your participants to use their cognitive skills in following directions.
Provide each participant with several pieces of flatware of different types: forks, spoons, knives.
Ask the first participant to give you a fork and hold out your hand, palm open. Accept a correct response but if an incorrect response is being made, close your hand and do not accept it. Repeat your direction, move your open palm toward the desired item. Ask other participants similar tasks.
Next, ask for a utensil that provides a specific use. “I’m going to have soup. What do I need to eat soup?” “I want to butter my toast. What do I need to spread the butter?”
Mix up the requests; sometimes a certain utensil, fork, sometimes a certain use, to stir my coffee.
To end the activity, participants can place all their utensils into the storage container or tray.
