This activity can be done with any resident. Prepare a cart with craft materials and a plan. You may plan to make spring decorations or holiday decorations.
Although most or all of the work may be done by the therapist, there should be an on-going dialogue or monologue about the project and what is being done. Occasionally a resident will be able to offer input; choice of colors, choice of size, or choice of items used. Once completed, the item is hung or taped to the resident’s door.

January | New Year’s requires a little sparkle so this door décor piece is decorated with silver glitter. Mix Elmer’s glue with a bit of water, paint it on the star and then sprinkle it generously with glitter. The fiery drops flying from the falling star are also painted silver. (Not pictured) There are enough patterns provided for years through 2024.

November | This decoration is particularly conducive to shared conversation. The turkey itself provides many opportunities for color choices but the topic is even better. The theme Thanksgiving promotes memories of family meals, preparing the turkey, making the stuffing and the baked sweet potatoes with marshmallows, and of course baking the pies. Even if the resident you are assisting with this craft does not respond to your questions, you can continue to discuss all the wonderful activities and foods associated with the holiday. Always remember, just because someone does not respond to you does not mean they are not listening. Tell them everything you know! Using a variety of bright colors on the tail and adding some glitter to the letters and the buckles will make the décor stand out and provide some real eye appeal.
